about joyce

I started teaching my 5 children nearly 30 years ago when homeschooling wasn’t cool. This decision not only changed my family’s lives, but transformed my vision for education, my career and dreams for bringing the homeschooling experience to Black families worldwide.

The traditional school setting was not fulfilling my children’s educational needs, and I was very unhappy about that. I was a housewife managing the home and having lots of babies. I found that bringing my children home to teach them was a blessing to me. And, after some time, we were able to feel totally confident in our decision to homeschool. I named my homeschool program “The Most Excellent Way Academy.”

As I was meditating one morning I saw a scripture in I Corinthians 12:31 – “but earnestly desire the best gifts; and yet I show you a more excellent way.” This inspired me in a way that confirmed my decision. I desired the best for my children – their talents, gifts, abilities, etc. But, because God loves me so much He assured me that He would show me a more excellent, magnificent, and outstanding way to teach my children. I looked forward to what He wanted to show me.

And, He did.

my mission

My work with the homeschooling community has been a focus on bringing Black history, experience and culture to the table with the innovative ideas and achievements we’ve accomplished. As co-founder of National Black Home Educators, a nonprofit organization committed to serving Black homeschooling families with resources, curriculum and community, I’ve had the honor of introducing the concept of homeschooling to families worldwide.
